Don't be fooled by sites that claim to perform our service.  They don't.  Here are a few that we've found:

1)  A site that claims to tell you if your rental home is in foreclosure, for free.  We tested this service with several properties that we know have foreclosure notices filed against them.  In every case, this site reported that no foreclosure documents were found.  It appears to be an unmaintained site that does not access any current foreclosure information at all.

2)  A site that claims to allow you to verify any landlord for free.  This site sells ratings to landlords.  Any landlord who does not purchase a approval form the site is automatically rated poorly due to a "lack of information".  Landlords that do purchase their ratings are subject to identity and background checks, but their properties are not checked for foreclosures.  This site does not exist to protect renters, it exists to help landlords market their properties.

3)  A site that will sell you an ebook telling you how to check your landlord.  Give us a call, we'll tell you how to do it for free.  However, without access to a national data source, you won't be able to access the depth of information that we can.  You'll be able to verify the ownership of the property and if a foreclosure has been filed, but in many jurisdictions this will require a trip to the county records office.  We provide a full criminal and civil background check, and save you time and hassle - not to mention the ability to get this information quickly, an important factor when you have found a great rental.
